Spartans Season Comes to a Close at the Hands of Charleston Southern in the Big South Tournament

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The USC Upstate baseball team fought to the bitter end but it was not enough as Charleston Southern eliminated the Spartans 6-2 in the First Round of the Big South Tournament on Tuesday night at Segra Stadium.

With the loss the Spartans end the season with a 23-30 record for second year in a row. With the win Charleston Southern advances to face No. 2 Radford in day two of the Big South Tournament.

Scoring Breakdown:

Top 3rd: Davis Wilber smoked a 1-1 pitch to center field to lead off the inning for the Spartans. Wilber advanced on a wild pitch and made it all the way around to third on an Andres Kim single. J.J. Shimko recorded his 27th RBI of the season with a sacrifice fly to left field.

Bottom 6th: Javon Martin with one out in the inning to keep the pressure on the USC Upstate defense. A single by Reid Hardwick down the right field line set the Buccaneers up with a pair of runners at the corners with only one out in the inning. Trey Van Der Weide issued a walk to Ryan Stoudemire to load up the bases. With two outs in the inning Max Ryerson singled to the shortstop to tie the game at one. Josh Litchfield hit a high chopper to second to bring in the go-ahead run. Kyle Horton bloped a 2-run single into centerfield to give Charleston Southern a 4-1 lead.

Bottom 7th: Brooks Bryan began the inning with a single to left field, one batter later and the Buccaneers had a pair of runners on the bases with a Hardwick single to right field. Stoudemire walked to load up the bases and Miller brought in a pair of runs with a double to right center field.  

Top 9th: Robby McGaha began the ninth inning with a double to right center field, Jason Matthews followed with a single to set the Spartans up with a pair of runners in scoring position after an overthrow by the Buccaneer outfield. Stone Stephenson brought in the second run of the game with a ground out to second.  


  • Trey Van Der Weide struck out a career high 9 batters in 5.2 innings of work. The southpaw allowed four runs off five hits in the contest.
  • Julian Rip and Garett Wallace both had multi-hit games for the Spartans, while J.J. Shimko recorded the only RBI of the contest.
  • Reid Hardwick and Kyle Horton both had a pair of hits in the ballgame to lead the Buccaneer offense. Starting pitcher Cody Maw threw 7.0 innings of 1 run baseball, allowing 6 hits and striking out eight batters in the process.

This concludes the 2019 baseball season for USC Upstate. The Spartans will begin preparing for the 2020 season in August.
