SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The USC Upstate baseball team lost their series finale to Winthrop University on Saturday afternoon at Harley Park by a final score of 9-1.
The Spartans drop to 23-29 on the season and 9-17 overall in Big South competition, meanwhile, Winthrop improves to 31-21 and 18-9 in conference play.
Top 1st: Scout McFalls began the game with a leadoff single to left field. Alex Raines followed the hit up with a single of his own to right center field. After a 5-6 double play retired the first two runners of the inning, a few batters later Hunter Lipscomb hit a two-run homerun over the right field fence to give Winthrop the early lead.
Top 3rd: The Eagles capitalized on their earlier lead once again in the top of the third inning. Tyler Backer singled to center field on a full count pitch to leadoff the inning for Winthrop. McFalls placed a ball perfectly down the first base line to give the Eagles a pair of runners on the base paths. A second consecutive double by Alex Raines loaded up the bases for Winthrop setting up Spencer Yankle to hit a two-run double to right center field. Lipscomb and Grant English also collected RBI's in the inning to give the Eagles a 6-0 advantage.
Bottom 3rd: The USC Upstate offense began to fight back in the bottom of the third inning. Jack Hennessy hit an infield single to begin the inning and moved over to second on a sacrifice bunt by Davis Wilber. Jeff Taylor roped a liner into left field to bring in Hennessy for the Spartans only run of the ball game.
Top 7th: With a pair of runners on and two outs in the inning the Spartans appeared to be heading toward a quiet inning. Instead Yankle singled down the right field line to score another run for the Eagles. McFalls came around to score on a wild pitch and English hit another RBI single through the right side of the infield.
