Spartans Stunned by Blue Hose

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – For the first time all season the USC Upstate baseball team was shutout in a game, losing 8-0 to Presbyterian College on Friday night at Harley Park.

With the loss USC Upstate falls to 16-18 overall on the season and 4-9 in Big South Conference competition. Presbyterian improves to 16-18 on the year and 8-5 in conference play.

Scoring Breakdown:

Top 2nd: Jimmy Marcelli reached on a Jason Matthews error to lead-off the inning. Jonathan White then walked and both runners moved up 90 feet on a wild pitch by Jordan Marks. Johnny Cook drew a full count walk to load up the bases against the Spartans. Another walk to Andrew Livingston brought in the first run of the game. Zacchaeus Rasberry hit an RBI single to bring in the second run of the inning, and error by Garett Wallace allowed the third run to score from second base.  

Top 3rd: Marcelli hit a one out single to right field and then stole second base to get into scoring position for the Blue Hose offense. Marcelli came around to score on an error by Jeff Taylor in left field.

Top 4th: Livingston doubled down the left field line to begin the fourth inning of action. Rasberry walked on four straight pitches to put a pair of ducks on the pond for Presbyterian. Nick Gumbarda hit a sacrifice fly to right field to give the Blue Hose a 5-0 lead. A Marcelli RBI gave Presbyterian a 6-0 advantage heading into the fifth inning.

Top 8th: Rasberry homered off the scoreboard in left field to begin the eighth inning. A few batters later Garrett Jones came around to score on the fifth Spartan error of the night to give Presbyterian a decisive 8-0 advantage.


  • J.J. Shimko went 2-for-3 at the plate with a walk in the game. Shimko was the only Spartan to have a multi-hit performance in the loss.
  • Zacchaeus Rasberry and Jimmy Marcelli both had multi-hit performances for the Blue Hose.
  • Eric Miles threw 7.0 innings of shutout of baseball to pick up the win for Presbyterian. The Blue Hose pitching staff struck out 12 Spartan batters in the game.

  • USC Upstate and Presbyterian will play a double header tomorrow afternoon starting at 2 p.m.
