Spartanburg, S.C. – The Wofford women's tennis team rallied from a 3-2 deficit to claim a 4-3 win over USC Upstate in the season opening match for both teams on Saturday afternoon at the Reeves Tennis Center.
Wofford improves to 1-0 while Upstate falls to 0-1
"It's always tough to lose a match 4-3 but I'm happy with the effort from all our girls," head coach Oliver Trittenwein said. "Both of our freshmen won their first dual match of the season. I'm hopeful we can bring this strong effort to our match next week at UNC Asheville."
The Terriers clinched the doubles point as they swept all three doubles matches.
Elin Hellberg got the Spartans off to a good start in singles play with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Annie Mayfield at number six singles. After Wofford claimed the top singles match, Upstate went up 3-2 thanks to a 6-2, 6-3 win for Vale Zarama over Curran Carver at number three singles and Gabriela Cevallos' 6-2, 6-4 triumph over Brittney Wilbur at number five singles.
Wofford tied the match with a win at number four singles before claiming the match victory with a win at number two singles.
Upstate travels to UNC Asheville next Saturday for a 3 p.m. match.
