Upstate Takes on Jacksonville this Weekend in Final ASUN Road Series

Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate softball team is set to play its final ASUN road series of the season this weekend as the Spartans travel to Jacksonville, Fla. for a three-game series against the Jacksonville Dolphins at the Debbie & Fred Pruitt Softball Complex.

The teams open the series on Saturday afternoon with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. followed by the finale on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Upstate was slated to begin its week on Tuesday with a doubleheader at East Tennessee State but was cancelled due to weather.

The Spartans (36-10, 9-3 ASUN) are coming off a three-game series sweep at home of Stetson last weekend and have won six of its last seven games dating back to April 8. Holly McKinnon compiled a 2-0 record with a 0.55 ERA and one save against Stetson and had one complete game shutout. Offensively, Kendsey Chappelear compiled a .571 average at the plate, while Abbie Millete hit two home runs and Ryan Rector drove in five runs.

Upstate currently has the best pitching staff in the ASUN this season, and sixth nationally, boasting a 1.36 team earned run average, and is second with 327 strikeouts and 7.39 strikeouts per seven innings. Kristen Wright leads the team offensively with a .348 average, and Karla Beasley has seven home runs and 34 RBI. Millete is also tied for the team-lead in home runs with seven. McKinnon is 19-6 with a 1.16 ERA and Lexi Shubert is 16-4 overall to go with a 1.62 ERA

Jacksonville (25-19, 3-6 ASUN) earned a doubleheader sweep of Savannah State on Wednesday after coming off a series loss last weekend at Kennesaw State. The Dolphins are led offensively by Heather Roberts with a .370 average, six home runs and 39 RBI. On the mound, Alyssa Bilodeau and Taylor Thorpe have eight wins each while Thorpe leads the team with a 2.63 ERA. Jacksonville is under the direction of third-year head coach Jennifer Steele.

The Spartans own a 16-6 lead in the all-time series with Jacksonville and have won 11 of the last 13 meetings. Upstate swept the Dolphins last season in a three-game series in Spartanburg.

The Spartans are off until May 6-7 when they close out their regular season with a three-game ASUN series at home against North Florida.
