Women’s Basketball Preview:  at Western Carolina

Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate women's basketball team concludes its four-game road trip on Tuesday afternoon traveling to Cullowhee, N.C. to face the Western Carolina Catamounts at 12 p.m. from the Ramsey Center.

USC Upstate (2-5) continued its road trip on Nov. 28 falling 71-66 at South Carolina State. Brianna Lewis had a career evening scoring a career-high 35 points to lead the Spartans offensively. Lewis became the first Spartan since the 2007-08 season to score 35 points in a game joining Courtney Hawkins, Julie Pridgeon, Gwen Proctor and Brenda Wofford. She fell one point shy of tying Proctor for the single-game scoring record of 36 and became the first USC Upstate player since Raven Jefferson on Dec. 3, 2016 against Bob Jones to score at least 30 points in a game. Natalia Panufnik also set a career-high with 11 points while Riley Popplewell had a team-best nine rebounds.

Lewis currently ranks first in the Big South this season averaging 23.3 points and 5.9 assists per game. She is also fifth in field goal percentage (47.2 percent) and seventh in free throw percentage (75.4 percent). DeNisha Swain sits tied for third with 3.0 steals per game while Popplewell is sixth with a team-leading 7.1 rebounds per game.

Western Carolina enters the game with a 1-8 overall record and is coming off a 69-51 loss to North Carolina A&T on Nov. 29. Jewell Smalls leads the team in scoring at 8.3 points per game while Gabby Smith averages a team-best 6.0 rebounds per game. The Catamounts are under the direction of fourth-year head coach Stephanie McCormick.

The Spartans are facing Western Carolina for the 13th time in program history with the Catamounts holding a 7-5 lead in the all-time series.
