Spartans Open ASUN Play Saturday at NJIT

Spartanburg, S.C. – After playing 15 non-conference games to open the 2017-18 season, the USC Upstate women's basketball team will begin its 14-game ASUN Conference slate on Saturday at 1 p.m. as the Spartans face NJIT at the Wellness and Events Center (WEC).

Upstate is 5-10 after claiming a 66-61 win over N.C. Central on Dec. 30 and a 109-39 triumph over Brevard on Tuesday. Tamera Thorpe scored a career-high 28 points in the win over N.C. Central while five players finished in double figures on Tuesday as Upstate surpassed the 100-point mark for the first time since a 103-55 win over Converse on Dec. 29, 2005.

Thorpe leads Upstate and is ninth in the conference with 12.6 points per game. The Greensboro, N.C. native is second in the league in field goal shooting percentage at 50 percent. Anda Kuzmina is also averaging double figures with 10.4 points per game. As a team, the Spartans are second in the league with 10.2 steals per game.

NJIT is 2-13 following a 61-46 home loss to Cornell on Wednesday morning. Tatianna Torres leads the team with 11.3 points per game while Danielle Tunstall is the top rebounder with 6.4 rebounds per game. Steve Lanpher is in his fifth season as head coach.

Upstate leads the all-time series 3-1 following a 70-66 NJIT win in the 2016-17 season finale. This is the third consecutive year that the teams have faced each other in their conference opener with Upstate claiming both previous matchups.
