USC Upstate Names McLane Interim Tennis Head Coach

Spartanburg, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Upstate athletics department has announced Wednesday that Tim McLane has been named interim head coach for the 2019 season.

McLane recently completed his second year as an assistant coach with USC Upstate under former head coach Oliver Trittenwein.

"I appreciate Coach McLane's service to our University and our student-athletes during his two years as Assistant Coach and we look forward to a successful year under his leadership," said Daniel Feig, USC Upstate Director of Athletics/Vice Chancellor for Intercollegiate Athletics.

McLane has played a crucial in for the Spartans exceling both on and off the court. Four USC Upstate tennis players have received postseason honors from the ASUN during his time as an assistant coach in Felix Ewers, Fernando Bernardes, Francisco Neto and Carol Sigaki. On the men's side, Ewers has been named ASUN First and Second Team All-Conference while both Bernardes and Neto were selected to the ASUN All-Freshman Team. Sigaki was a two-time honoree on the ASUN All-Academic Team and, this past season, was voted Second Team All-Conference.

The tennis program had 15 student-athletes record grade-point averages over 3.0 during the 2017-18 academic year including seven with perfect 4.0 GPA's.

"I would like to thank Chancellor (Brendan) Kelly, Daniel Feig and Jeff Crane for giving me this opportunity and trusting me to lead our men's and women's tennis programs," said McLane. "During my time here at USC Upstate I have grown to truly enjoy the campus and its people, and the Upstate area. We have a great mix of returners and newcomers on both teams next year and I am excited for the potential of both programs as we enter our first year in the Big South Conference. I can't wait to get back on the court with everyone in the fall and get to work. Go Spartans!"

Prior to arriving at USC Upstate in 2017, McLane was an assistant men's tennis coach from 2014-16 at Mercer. While at Mercer, he was responsible for team practices and conditioning, travel scheduling and serving as tournament director for fall tournaments. Under McLane's direction, Sam Philp was named the 2015 SoCon Freshman of the Year while Arsav Mohanty and Frernando Guardia earned Second Team All-SoCon honors in 2015 and 2016, respectively. The Bears were also honored as an ITA All-Academic Team in 2014, 2015 and 2016.

McLane began his coaching career in August 2009 at St. Stephen's Tennis Academy where he was in charge of scheduling, coordinating and coaching group and individual practices. McLane was also responsible for facility maintenance.

He graduated in 2009 from Monmouth University where he played tennis for four years and earned a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration with a minor in Information Technology. McLane also earned his Master of Business Administration from Mercer in May, 2016.
