USC Upstate Travels to Wilmington this Weekend for Two Matches

Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate men's tennis team is traveling to Wilmington, N.C. this weekend for a pair of non-conference matches against the Liberty Flames and UNC Wilmington Seahawks from the UNCW Courts.

The Spartans are scheduled to play two matches on Saturday beginning at 10 a.m. versus Liberty and at 2 p.m. against UNC Wilmington.

USC Upstate began a four-match road trip on Tuesday afternoon dropping a 4-3 decision at Gardner-Webb. The Spartans won the doubles point after securing victories at No. 1 and No. 3 from Fernando Bernardes, Ignacio Garrido, Luka Eble and Felix Ewers. In singles play, Bernardes won at No. 6 and Francisco Neto at No. 2.

Liberty enters the weekend with a 2-3 overall record after picking up wins against North Carolina A&T and Kennesaw State. The Flames are led in singles play by Eddie Gutierrez with a 12-9 record and has teamed up with Vince Salas in doubles to go 11-5. Liberty is led by first-year head coach Derek Schwandt.

UNC Wilmington currently sits at 2-1 this season with victories over Florida Gulf Coast and Appalachian State. Michael Copeland and Ignasi de Rueda lead the Seahawks in singles play with 3-0 records. Copeland is also one of the top doubles players combining with Agustin Savarino to go 2-0 for the year. UNCW is under the direction of 11th-year head coach Mait DuBois.
