Upstate Finishes Conference-Opening Road Trip at FGCU, Stetson

Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate men's basketball team wraps up a three-game road trip to begin conference play this weekend when it travels to the state of Florida for a pair of contests against the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles and Stetson Hatters.

Upstate opens its week on Thursday evening at 7 p.m. against Florida Gulf Coast before traveling to Stetson on Saturday afternoon for a 4 p.m. tip off.

The Spartans began conference play last Saturday at NJIT and dropped a 98-87 contest to the Highlanders. For the second time this season, Upstate had five players score in double-figures led by 16 points each from Jure Span and Ramel Thompkins. Malik Moore and Mike Cunningham each added 15 points and Deion Holmes contributed 11. Avery Diggs set a new career-high with nine rebounds to lead the Spartans defensively.

Upstate finished the game shooting 49.3 percent overall and 42.9 percent behind the 3-point line. The Spartans held a 24-8 advantage in second chance points courtesy of 12 offensive rebounds.

Florida Gulf Coast enters the matchup with a 10-8 overall record and 1-0 conference mark after defeating Stetson 90-52 in its conference opener last Saturday. The Eagles have three players currently averaging in double-figures offensively led by Brandon Goodwin with 17.6 points per game. Christian Terrell leads FGCU on the defensive side with 5.5 rebounds per contest. The Eagles are under the direction of fifth-year head coach Joe Dooley.

Stetson is 8-9 this season and 0-1 against league opponents after falling at Florida Gulf Coast on Jan. 6. The Hatters also have three players averaging over 10 points per game this season led by Divine Myles with 17.0. Defensively, Abayomi Iyiola is contributing a team-best 6.2 rebounds per game. Stetson is led by fifth-year head coach Corey Williams.

Upstate leads the all-time series against the Hatters 10-9 but trails against Florida Gulf Coast 15-6.
