Upstate Travels to NJIT on Saturday to Begin Conference Play

Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate men's basketball team opens its conference schedule Saturday afternoon as it travels north to Newark, N.J. to face the NJIT Highlanders in a 4 p.m. contest from the Wellness and Events Center (WEC).

The Spartans are facing the Highlanders in the conference opener for the third consecutive season and have won both of the previous meetings. Upstate is beginning a three-game road trip in conference play and continues next weekend at Florida Gulf Coast and Stetson.

The Spartans closed out non-conference play on Tuesday evening with a 79-77 loss at home to UMKC. Malik Moore and Jure Span each scored 22 points to lead Upstate offensively while Thomas Booker came off the bench to score a career-high 12. Span, who also set a new career-high in scoring, fell just shy of a triple-double after posting eight rebounds and eight assists.

The Spartans finished the game shooting 46.4 percent from the field and outrebounded UMKC 36-28. Upstate also held a 26-22 advantage in points in the paint, 18-10 in second chance points and 14-7 in bench points.

NJIT currently sits at 7-8 on the season with wins over Lafayette, Kean, Drexel, LIU Brooklyn, UMass Lowell, Fairleigh Dickinson and Bryn Athyn. Anthony Tarke is one of two players averaging in double-figures with a team-leading 14.3 points per game while Diandre Wilson contributes 11.4. Abdul Lewis leads the Highlanders defensively averaging 8.6 rebounds per game. NJIT is under the direction of second-year head coach Brian Kennedy.

The Spartans and Highlanders are meeting for the fifth time in program history with Upstate holding a 3-1 lead in the all-time series.
