Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate men's basketball team is back at the G.B. Hodge Center for the next two games as the Spartans host the Charleston Southern Buccaneers and Paine College Lions in a pair of non-conference contests.

Upstate begins the two-game home stretch on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. against Charleston Southern before facing Paine College at 7 p.m. on Monday evening.

The Spartans are back in action for the fourth time in nine days since opening their season on Nov. 10 at 15th-ranked Minnesota. Upstate traveled to Athens, Ga. on Tuesday and dropped a hard-fought 74-65 decision to the Georgia Bulldogs. The Spartans held a 16-13 advantage over the Bulldogs in points off turnovers, 11-4 in fast break points and 15-14 in bench points. Upstate had four players score in double-figures led by Malik Moore and Mike Cunningham with 16 points each.

Moore and Cunningham are two of four Spartans averaging 10 or more points per game this season along with Jure Span and Deion Holmes. Moore currently ranks third in the conference in points per game, while Span is fourth in both field goal percentage and 3-point field goal percentage and sixth in scoring. Ramel Thompkins sits third in the league in rebounds per game and Avery Diggs is fourth in blocks per game.

As a team, Upstate ranks second in the ASUN in 3-point field goal percentage and tied for third in steals per game.

Charleston Southern enters the weekend with a 1-2 overall record after opening its season against Davidson, N.C. State and Columbia International. The Buccaneers defeated Columbia International in its home opener, 98-58, on Wednesday. Charleston Southern is under the direction of 13th-year head coach Barclay Radebaugh.

Paine College also sits at 1-2 on the season but plays two games this weekend against Georgia College and Flagler as part of the L.S. Epps Memorial Classic in Atlanta. The Lions captured their first win of the season on Nov. 15 after recording a 78-70 victory against USC-Aiken. Paine College is led by second-year head coach Darryl Stinson.

The Spartans are facing the Buccaneers for the fifth time in program history and first against the Lions. Charleston Southern leads the all-time series 3-1 but Upstate won 79-77 last season in Charleston on a 3-pointer by Cunningham with seven seconds left in the game.
