Jacksonville Spoils USC Upstate’s Senior Day

Spartanburg, S.C. – The Jacksonville Dolphins used a five-run sixth inning to surge past USC Upstate as they claimed a 14-5 win in an ASUN Conference contest at Harley Park on Saturday.

Jacksonville improves to 33-17 overall and 10-6 in the ASUN while USC Upstate drops to 23-26-1 and 5-12.

Scoring Breakdown

  • Bottom 2ndKyle Gensler led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a Toran Shahidi base hit. Gensler reached third as Shahidi was retired on a fielder's choice. Gensler scored on an Andres Kim sacrifice fly.
  • Bottom 3rdMason Stewart singled to start the inning. Following a sacrifice bunt and groundout that advanced Stewart to third, Charlie Carpenter drove in his 37th run of the season with a single for a 2-0 USC Upstate lead.
  • Top 5th – Scott Dubrule hit a bases-clearing double with two outs to give the Dolphins a 3-2 lead.
  • Bottom 5thWill Hardigree led off with a single, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a Jake Bourke single. Bourke scored on an error, with Pat Raiff scoring on a Gensler double for a 5-3 lead.
  • Top 6th –  After a strikeout, the Dolphins struck with three straight singles to load the bases before a Franco Guardascione single brought the Dolphins within a run. Chris Lehane's two-run single allowed Jacksonville to claim a 6-5 lead as RBI singles by Dubrule and Angel Camacho completed the five-run inning.
  • Top 7th – Jacksonville scored four runs on a fielder's choice, a Lehane single and a two-run single by Dubrule.
  • Top 8th – Camacho scored on a Cory Garrastazu sacrifice fly.
  • Top 9th – Lehane scored on a Dubrule single.

Notables

  • Carpenter, Gensler and Bourke each had two hits and an RBI to lead the Spartans.
  • Dubrule went 5-for-6 with seven RBI to lead Jacksonville.
  • Lehane, Guardascione, Garrastazu and Conner Stephens each had multi-hit games.
  • Spencer Stockton (6-5) earned the win, allowing five runs, four earned, on 10 hits with a walk and four strikeouts.
  • Blake Whitney (5-2) took the loss, allowing six runs on seven hits with four walks and eight strikeouts in 5.1 innings.
  • USC Upstate honored seniors Charlie Carpenter, Kevin Hickey, Devon Ortiz, Pat Raiff, Russell Schwertfeger and Blake Whitney prior to the game.
