Spartanburg, S.C. – USC Upstate junior catcher Charlie Carpenter has been named to the South-ABCA/Rawlings All-Region Second Team, it was announced Wednesday evening. He is the first player during the Division I era to earn ABCA All-Region accolades.
Earlier on Wednesday, Carpenter was selected by the Atlanta Braves with the 770th pick in the 26th round of the MLB Draft, becoming the 28th Spartan in school history to join the professional ranks.
Carpenter earned a spot on the All-Region Team after he set a Division I record with 11 home runs. He led the team with a .357 batting average, 38 runs scored, 70 hits, 46 RBI and a team-best 19 multi-hit games. The Winter Springs, Fla. native threw out 21 would-be base stealers as the Spartans led the ASUN Conference with 29 runners caught stealing. Carpenter hit a walk-off two-run home run in a 5-3 victory over Quinnipiac on March 17 and hit a walk-off grand slam in a 6-5 triumph over Wofford on May 10. During a 21-20 win over Dayton on Feb. 25, Carpenter went 4-for-5 with three runs scored and a career-high six RBI.
The South All-Region Team is made up of players from 41 schools representing the Atlantic Coast Conference, ASUN Conference, American Conference, Big South Conference, Conference USA, Horizon League, Ohio Valley, Southeastern Conference and Southern Conference.
