Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate baseball team lost to Wright State 5-1 in a non-conference game on Friday afternoon at Harley Park.

Wright State improves to 5-4 while Upstate falls to 3-7

Scoring Breakdown

  • Top 3rd – Kevin Whatley led off the inning with a single before two walks loaded the bases. Whatley scored on a fielder's choice with another run scoring on an infield single to give the Raiders a 2-0 lead.
  • Top 5th – Seth Gray led off the inning with a single before stealing second and advancing to third on a groundout. Gray would score on a groundout.
  • Top 6th – Whatley reached on a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Following an error, Whatley scored on a sacrifice fly.
  • Bottom 7thBrendan Brundage reached on a leadoff walk followed by a walk to Drake Harris. After a sacrifice bunt moved the runners into scoring position, Brundage would score on a Pat Raiff groundout to get Upstate on the board.
  • Top 9th – JD Orr scored on an Adrian Marquez single.

Notables

  • Brundage, Devon Ortiz and Zach Krider each had two hits for Upstate.
  • Wright State left the bases loaded in the third inning while Upstate did the same in the eighth.
  • Gray and Whatley led Wright State with two hits.
  • Both teams finished with eight hits.
  • Ryan Weiss (1-0) earned the win as he gave up six hits with a walk and five strikeouts in 5.2 innings.
