Upstate Breaks Six School Records Thursday at Carolina’s Cup

Rock Hill, S.C. – The USC Upstate track and field team had a successful showing on Thursday as it set six school records, tied one school mark and achieved 14 personal-bests during the Carolina's Cup hosted by Winthrop University at the Irwin Belk Track.

The Spartan women finished 3rd in the overall team rankings with 78 points while the men were 6th with 28 points.

On the women's side, Upstate broke four school records led by two from Destinie Sykes. Sykes began the evening by breaking her own school record in the triple jump with a personal-best mark of 11.32-meters (37-01.75) and followed with a new school record in the 400-meter hurdles after her time of 1:08.16, breaking the old mark set by Rebecca Elliott at the 2013 Johnson C. Smith Invitational.  Sykes would finish 2nd in the triple jump. Ashley Edmond would break her old school record in the 400-meter dash as she turned in a personal-best time of 57.76 to earn a 3rd place finish. Jasmine Polite capped off the night for the Spartans as she broke Jemeli Sang's three-year old record in the 3000-meter run with a time of 10:09.69 en route to a 2nd place finish.

Brittany Walls also tied her own school record in the high jump, set two weeks ago at the Raleigh Relays, after finishing 2nd with a leap of 1.65-meters (5-05.00).

The Spartan women had seven athletes turn in personal-best performances including Sykes, Walls, Edmond and Polite. Others that set new personal-bests included:  KeAndrea Ladson (long jump), Heaven Briggs (400-meter dash) and Danielle Horneff (3000-meter run). Ladson would finish 2nd in the long jump event.

Upstate had two school records broken on the men's side by Kyle Jones and Ross Oden. Jones posted a personal-best time in the 400-meter hurdles of 55.58 to finish 4th and surpassed the previous record set by Danny Moore at the 2010 A-Sun Championships. Oden also broke a four-year old school record in the 3000-meter run as he finished 5th with a personal-best time of 8:45.60.

Jones and Oden were two of five Spartan men to tally new personal-bests Thursday evening. Bryson Dawkins had a personal-best in the 800-meter run, Ronald Collins in the 400-meter hurdles and Spencer Nieto in the 3000-meter run.

Alexis Jacobs had a throw of 12.45-meters (40-10.25) in the shot put to garner a 2nd place finish. Dominique Nock added two 3rd place performances in the 100-meter dash (12.09) and 200-meter dash (25.01).

Michael Smith contributed a 2nd place finish in the triple jump with a mark of 14.28-meters (46-10.25). Matt Johnson would place 3rd in the 800-meter run after posting a time of 1:55.00.

Appalachian State swept the team competition as the women recorded 141 points and the men 134.

Upstate travels to Charlotte, N.C. next weekend (Apr. 18-19) for the Charlotte Invitational.
