Upstate Travels to N.C. State this Weekend for Raleigh Relays

Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate track and field team heads to North Carolina State University this weekend to compete in the Raleigh Relays from the Paul H. Derr Track.

The meet begins Friday morning at 8:45 a.m. with section 3 of the men's 3000-meter steeplechase and lasts until 10:35 p.m. with section 1 of the men's 10,000-meter run. Section 2 of the women's 10,000-meter run kicks off the schedule of events Saturday morning at 9:30 a.m. and will wrap up at 4:45 p.m. with the women's 4x400-meter relay.

Upstate is competing in its third meet of the outdoor season after traveling last weekend to Charlotte, N.C. for the 49er Classic.

Brenicke Johnson picked up her second straight top-5 finish to start the season last weekend in Charlotte. She qualified on Friday for the 100-meter dash final after finishing seventh in the preliminaries with a time of 11.95. Johnson would finish fifth in the final running an 11.94 in the event.

Johnson highlighted a weekend for Upstate which saw it set two school records while 18 athletes achieved new personal-bests and one tied his mark. KeAndrea Ladson and Alexis Jacobs broke the school record in their respective event as Ladson broke her own record in the 100-meter hurdles and Jacobs became the school's new discus throw record holder.

Ladson and Brittany Walls led the Spartans as they achieved two new personal-bests each. Ladson had personal-bests in the 100-meter hurdles and high jump, and Walls in the 100-meter hurdles and 200-meter dash. The Upstate women also had personal-bests recorded by Jacobs (discus), Molly Bliss (1500-meter run), Jasmine Polite (5000-meter run), Danielle Horneff (5000-meter run), Destinie Sykes (100-meter hurdles), Draneisha Griffin (long jump), Kierstin Williams (hammer throw) and Essence Jackson (800-meter run). On the men's side, Rashaude Gibbs (100-meter dash), Ross Oden (5000-meter run), Cameron Pratt (110-meter hurdles), Kyle Jones (400-meter hurdles), Cody Ellison (5000-meter run), Michael Smith (long jump), Bryson Dawkins (800-meter run) and Josh Lee (800-meter run) each picked up new personal-bests. Brandon Goodman tied his personal-best in the high jump.

Following this weekend's action, the Spartans will take the next two weeks off before heading to Rock Hill on Apr. 10 for the Carolina Cup hosted by Winthrop University.
