Upstate SAAC to Hold Project Life Movement Swab Drive

Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) is teaming up with Project Life Movement on Tuesday, August 22 to hold a Swab Drive in support of increasing the number of potential bone marrow donors nationwide.

The Swab Drive is being held during the university's Stadium Party at County University Soccer Stadium. The organization will be signing up potential donors beginning at 4 p.m. and ending at the close of the event.

"A simple swab can end up saving a life," said Dr. Jim Griffis, Upstate's Faculty Athletics Representative. "USC Upstate SAAC is honored to be able to help Project Life Movement's goal of increasing the number of potential bone marrow donors. At the same time we meet our goal of helping the Spartanburg community."

The non-profit organization, based out of Charlotte, N.C., under the leadership of Executive Director Dr. David S. Lindsay, is focused on creating a national movement to increase the potential pool of bone marrow and tissue donors by testing and registering college students with a simple cheek swab.

The ASUN Conference recently announced its partnership with Project Life Movement (PLM) for the upcoming academic year.  Project Life is working with each individual ASUN campus SAAC to sponsor and promote a local cheek swab drive to increase the national bone marrow registry. Dr. Lindsay will also be on hand at the event to help train volunteers and set up the swabbing stations.

"Our partnership with Project Life Movement is a very exciting step for SAAC as a whole," said senior volleyball player Kaleigh Kelley, who also serves as Upstate's SAAC President and ASUN SAAC Chair. "We have had the opportunity in the past to see how our school, students and communities come together to build, donate items, and time to organizations. But, our partnership with PLM gives us an opportunity to potentially help save a life. I'm looking forward to watching our campus come together once again and be able to show Project Life and its patients what being a Spartan is all about."

Upstate SAAC will be promoting the event on social media with the hashtag #swabspartanstrong. A drawing is also being held for a $50 Chick-fil-A gift card for all who register.
