USC Upstate has been fortunate to partner with individuals to create some of the more impressive athletic facilities in the region and, arguably, the nation. It goes without saying that Cyrill Stadium is one such facility thanks to the efforts of Frank Cyrill.
Cyrill had a vision to create one of, if not the, best softball facilities in the South, regardless of NCAA Division status. After several long hours of manual labor put in by Cyrill and head softball coach Chris Hawkins, along with the help of select other people and companies, Cyrill Stadium opened for the 2002 season.
The stadium was constructed in stages as the field, dugouts, concrete seating area, and lights were installed first for the 2002 season. The press box was completed for the 2004 season, while stadium seating was completed in December of 2004. Prior to the 2017 season, a new video scorebord was constructed beyond the left field fence. The result of Cyrill's vision and commitment to the University is Cyrill Stadium, one of the best college softball stadiums around.
Cyrill Stadium has received numerous awards since its completion. The facility earned the Sports Turf Manager’s College Softball Field of the Year in 2015 and 2006, as well as several South Carolina Sports Turf Manager’s Field of the Year honors. Cyrill Stadium has also been the recipient of the 2006 NFCA/TURFACE National Field Maintenance Award and the 2003 regional TURFACE Field Maintenance Award.
"Cyrill Stadium is an awesome place to play softball. The constant additions to our facilities have made it a great environment for our sport. The bathroom addition to our dugouts, the brand new scoreboard, and fully wired ESPN towers for televising our games, have made a huge impact. Our double cages, tee area, practice infield and throwing area are a great enhancement as well. We are looking to install a padded fence around our outfield fence this upcoming season to make a beautiful and safe backdrop! A lot of people bring their families out to enjoy some very good softball. There is a lot of excitement around our program and community!"
